Vernon contains the lesser villages of Rockville, Talcottville and Dobsonville.

Vernon was incorporated in October 1808, from Bolton.

Vernon was titled after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.

The Town of Vernon and town/city of Rockville merged as a town on July 1, 1965.
